Obituary for Sybil Hamrick (Williams)

Print
Sybil Williams Hamrick, age 85, passed away Friday August 30, 2019. A longtime resident of Spindale, she was born April 29, 1934 to Claude and Bertie Williams. Sybil was the widow of Steve D. Hamrick, her husband of almost 50 years.
In addition to her parents and husband, Sybil was preceded in death by her brothers Donald, Lewis, and Charlie Bob Williams, as well as sister Geraldine Laughter.
As a young woman Sybil worked in textiles as a seamstress but spent the majority of her adult life as a homemaker. Through the years whatever hobby her husband Steve pursued, she became involved with as well. If he was gardening, Sybil canned, if he was collecting minerals, she was at the gem mines panning right alongside him. Sybil sanded, stained and waxed the fine furniture Steve crafted and proudly wore the jewelry he faceted and made. She painted and liked crafts, read a great deal and was delighted to tell friends that her name had been used as a character in a book her son-in-law published. As their grandchildren came along Sybil and Steve camped in Spruce Pine and loved spending time there with them.
Sybil is survived by her son Tony, his wife Mara, their three sons Evan, Clay , Will Hamrick and his fiancée Sarah Bryan; her son Chuck Hamrick, his wife Diane, their son Warren Hamrick, his wife Jenny and their son Mason Hamrick, as well as Chuck and Diane's daughter Lacey Hyde; her daughter Lynn H. Saunders, her husband Dr. John F. Saunders, their son John W Saunders, his wife Katie and their son Colin, as well as Lynn and John's son Jake Saunders and his wife Karina. Sybil also leaves behind many cherished nieces and nephews, along with their spouses and families.
Sybil loved and enjoyed her extensive families on both the Williams and Hamrick sides. Raising their young family in the 50's and 60's the families were a tight knit group. They worked together, worshiped together, lived close to one another and often vacationed together. As adults, when the cousins reminiscence it’s apparent the close family ties helped shape their lives.
She was a faithful member of Gilkey Baptist Church for the past 30 years. Like the New Testament parable of the women with only one coin to give, Sybil gave selflessly to her church and its missions with her service and contributions. She strived to be a witness of God's Love and Grace. She was kind to everyone.
When her grandchildren were asked what words brought their MawMaw to mind they said: precious, steadfast, spirited, caring, treasured, cherished, conscientious, thoughtful, animated...and colorfully coordinated! She loved these young people with her whole heart.
Please remember Sybil Hamrick as a Born Again Christian, an optimist, a dedicated wife, adored mother and respected member of her church and community. If you would like to honor this well lived life please consider a donation to Gilkey Baptist Church (missions) - Hwy221 N, Rutherfordton, NC 28139, Hospice of Carolina Foothills PO Box 336, Forest City, NC 28043, or any charity of your choice.
